  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message HL641 - Where-used list contains fewer objects than number of entries found (ALL) ?

The SAP error message HL641 indicates that there is a discrepancy in the where-used list for a particular object. This typically occurs when the system finds more entries than the actual objects that are being referenced. This can happen for various reasons, including inconsistencies in the database, issues with the object itself, or problems with the way the where-used list is generated.

    Causes:

    1. Database Inconsistencies: There may be inconsistencies in the database that lead to incorrect entries being counted.
    2. Transport Issues: If objects were transported between systems (e.g., from development to production), there may be discrepancies in the where-used list.
    3. Deleted or Inactive Objects: If objects have been deleted or are inactive but still referenced in the where-used list, this can lead to mismatches.
    4. Buffer Issues: Sometimes, the SAP buffer may not be updated correctly, leading to outdated information being displayed.
    5. Custom Code: Custom developments or modifications may not be properly accounted for in the where-used list.

    Solutions:

    1. Rebuild the Where-Used List: You can try to regenerate the where-used list for the affected object. This can often resolve discrepancies.

      • Use transaction SE11 or SE80 to access the object and regenerate the where-used list.
    2. Check for Inactive Objects: Review the objects referenced in the where-used list to ensure they are active and exist in the system.

    3. Database Consistency Check: Run consistency checks on the database to identify and resolve any inconsistencies.

      • Use transaction SE14 to check and repair database objects.
    4. Clear Buffer: Clear the SAP buffer to ensure that you are working with the most up-to-date information.

      • You can do this using transaction SM12 (for lock entries) and SM21 (for system logs).
    5. Transport Management: If the issue arose after a transport, check the transport logs for any errors or warnings that may indicate problems with the transport.

    6. SAP Notes: Check the SAP Support Portal for any relevant SAP Notes that may address this specific error. There may be patches or updates available that resolve the issue.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as SE11 (Data Dictionary), SE80 (Object Navigator), and SE14 (Database Utility).
