Message type: E = Error
Message class: G1 - Report Writer: Report Painter-specific messages
Message number: 004
Message text: Characteristic value for characteristic & in row block & is not unique.
You maintained several intervals and/or single values in the row block
&v2& for the characteristic. In doing so, at least one value appeared
more than once or two intervals overlap.
This causes the data records belonging to it to be used more than once
in the Report Writer, that means that they are referred to more than
once in the row or that subtotals are entered twice.
If the situation described is undesirable, maintain the characteristic
values in such a way that the data does not appear more than once.

G1004
- Characteristic value for characteristic & in row block & is not unique. ?The SAP error message G1004 indicates that there is a problem with the uniqueness of characteristic values in a specific context, typically when working with characteristics in a classification system or when creating or modifying master data (like materials or equipment) that uses characteristics.
Cause:
The error occurs when you attempt to assign a characteristic value to a characteristic in a way that violates the uniqueness constraint. This means that the same characteristic value is being assigned to the same characteristic in a row block where it is expected to be unique. This can happen in various scenarios, such as:
- Duplicate Entries: You may have multiple entries for the same characteristic value in the same classification or data record.
- Incorrect Data Entry: There might be a mistake in data entry where the same value is inadvertently entered multiple times.
- Configuration Issues: The configuration of the characteristics and their values may not be set up correctly, leading to conflicts.
Solution:
To resolve the G1004 error, you can take the following steps:
Check for Duplicates: Review the entries in the row block mentioned in the error message. Look for duplicate characteristic values assigned to the same characteristic. Remove or correct any duplicates.
Validate Data Entry: Ensure that the data being entered is correct and adheres to the uniqueness requirement. If you are using a template or mass upload, check for duplicates in the source data.
Review Characteristic Configuration: If you have access to the configuration settings, check the settings for the characteristics involved. Ensure that the uniqueness constraints are correctly defined and that they align with your business requirements.
Use Transaction Codes: If applicable, use transaction codes like CL02 (Change Class) or CL03 (Display Class) to review the characteristics and their values. This can help you identify where the conflict is occurring.
Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for more detailed information on how to manage characteristics and their values.
Seek Help from SAP Support: If the issue persists and you cannot identify the cause, consider reaching out to SAP support or your internal SAP team for assistance.
