Message type: E = Error
Message class: FSCY - Generation of Cover Pools - Flexible Master Data Structure
Message number: 138
Message text: Changing substring &1 is not possible; master data exists
You want to change the length of the substring &V1&, but this is not
possible because master data has been created using this substring or
the substring still contains entries.
If the master data subdivision is active, you cannot change the length
or the position of the substring for a subdivision ID if master data
that was created using this subdivision ID still exists. If there are
still entries, you can simply change the position in the master data.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

- Changing substring &1 is not possible; master data exists ?The SAP error message FSCY138, which states "Changing substring &1 is not possible; master data exists," typically occurs when you attempt to change a substring of a master data record in SAP, but the system prevents this action because there are existing dependencies or references to that master data.
Cause:
- Existing Master Data: The substring you are trying to change is part of a master data record that is already in use. This could be due to existing transactions, configurations, or other dependencies that rely on the current value of that substring.
- Data Integrity: SAP enforces data integrity rules to ensure that changes do not lead to inconsistencies in the system. If a substring is linked to other records, changing it could disrupt those links.
Solution:
- Check Dependencies: Before making changes, check if there are any existing transactions or records that depend on the substring you want to change. You may need to review related master data or transaction data.
- Delete or Archive Related Data: If possible, delete or archive the dependent records that are preventing the change. Ensure that this action is compliant with your organization's data management policies.
- Use Alternative Methods: If changing the substring is not possible, consider whether you can achieve your goal through other means, such as creating a new record with the desired substring and updating references accordingly.
- Consult Documentation: Review SAP documentation or consult with your SAP support team for specific guidelines related to the master data you are working with.
- Authorization Check: Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to make changes to the master data. Sometimes, restrictions can be due to user roles and permissions.
