Message class: F4 - Line items/balances/configuration
Message number: 628
Message text: Total output length (&) exceeds & characters
The total length of an output line exceeds the width of a display line.
The width of a display line is normally 132 characters, for documents
it is, however, only 61 characters and is only 44 characters for
clearing procedures.
Reduce the length of the output line by taking out individual fields or
by specifying individual fields with offset (field is only displayed as
from a particular position) or length (field is only displayed with a
particular length).
You can change the offset and length using the function <LS>Extras ->
Display format</> and by positioning the cursor on the field whose
display format is to be changed at the same time.
You can also use text fields or fields which have different information
at the beginning or at the end of the field (document numbers,
allocation numbers).

- Total output length (&) exceeds & characters ?The SAP error message F4628, which states "Total output length (&) exceeds & characters," typically occurs in the context of financial reporting or document generation within SAP. This error indicates that the total length of the output data being generated exceeds the maximum allowed character limit.
Cause:
- Output Length Exceeded: The primary cause of this error is that the total length of the output data (such as a report, invoice, or document) exceeds the predefined limit set in the SAP system.
- Configuration Settings: The output length limits may be defined in the configuration settings of the specific SAP module you are working with (e.g., FI, CO).
- Data Volume: The volume of data being processed or displayed in a single output can also lead to this error, especially if there are many line items or detailed information being included.
Solution:
- Check Output Configuration: Review the configuration settings for the output format in the relevant SAP module. You may need to adjust the settings to allow for a longer output length.
- Reduce Output Data: If possible, try to reduce the amount of data being included in the output. This could involve filtering out unnecessary line items or summarizing data.
- Modify Layout: If you are using a custom layout (e.g., SmartForms, SAPscript), consider modifying the layout to reduce the total output length.
- Split Output: If the output is too large, consider splitting it into multiple outputs or pages to stay within the character limit.
- Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for specific guidance on the output length limits for the module you are using.
