  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message DO842 - Alias name must not be displayed ?

The SAP error message DO842 ("Alias name must not be displayed") typically occurs in the context of data extraction or reporting, particularly when dealing with InfoObjects in SAP BW (Business Warehouse) or when using certain reporting tools. This error indicates that there is an issue with the way an alias name is being handled in the system.

    Cause:

    1. Alias Configuration: The error often arises when an InfoObject has been configured with an alias that is not set up correctly or is being referenced in a way that is not allowed.
    2. Data Model Issues: There may be inconsistencies in the data model, such as incorrect relationships or settings that lead to the alias being displayed when it shouldn't be.
    3. Query Design: If you are using a query that references an InfoObject with an alias, the query might be incorrectly set up to display the alias name.

    Solution:

    1. Check Alias Settings:

      • Go to the InfoObject maintenance (transaction code RSD1) and check the alias settings for the InfoObject in question. Ensure that the alias is configured correctly and is not set to be displayed in contexts where it shouldn't be.
    2. Review Query Design:

      • If the error occurs in a query, open the query in the Query Designer (transaction code RSRQ) and check the properties of the InfoObject being used. Make sure that the alias is not being selected for display if it is not supposed to be.
    3. Adjust Data Model:

      • Review the data model for any inconsistencies or incorrect settings that might be causing the alias to be displayed. This may involve checking the InfoProvider, transformations, and data flows.
    4. Consult Documentation:

      • Refer to SAP documentation or notes related to the specific version of SAP BW you are using. There may be specific guidelines or patches that address this issue.
