Message text: Maintain user classification only in the central system
Central User Administration (CUA) is active in your system landscape.
The maintenance of the license data is set to "Global". The user
classifications should therefore only be maintained in the central
system.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.
Perform the user classification in the central system.
If it is absolutely necessary, perform the classification in the child
system. Then transfer the data to the central system. Use transaction
"SCUG" on the central system to do this.

- Maintain user classification only in the central system ?The SAP error message BV285, which states "Maintain user classification only in the central system," typically occurs in a distributed system landscape where there is a central system (like an SAP Central User Administration (CUA) system) and one or more child systems. This error indicates that user classifications (such as roles, authorizations, or other user-related settings) should only be maintained in the central system and not in the child systems.
Cause:
- Central User Administration (CUA): The error arises when an attempt is made to maintain user classifications directly in a child system instead of the central system.
- Configuration Issue: The system may not be properly configured to direct user classification maintenance to the central system.
- User Role Assignment: Users may be trying to assign roles or classifications that are meant to be managed centrally.
Solution:
- Use the Central System: To resolve this error, you need to perform user classification maintenance in the central system. Log into the central system and make the necessary changes there.
- Check CUA Configuration: Ensure that the Central User Administration is correctly configured. This includes verifying that the child systems are properly connected to the central system.
- User Management: If you need to assign roles or classifications, do so in the central system. After making changes, they will be propagated to the child systems as per the CUA settings.
- Authorization Checks: Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations in the central system to maintain user classifications.
