  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message BRAIN_DEV006 - Calculation before aggregation is not possible ?

The SAP error message BRAIN_DEV006: Calculation before aggregation is not possible typically occurs in the context of SAP BW (Business Warehouse) or SAP BW/4HANA when working with queries in the BEx (Business Explorer) Analyzer or when executing queries in the SAP BW system. This error indicates that there is an issue with the way calculations are being defined in the query, particularly when it comes to the order of operations in the data processing.

    Cause:

    1. Incorrect Calculation Context: The error often arises when a calculated key figure is defined in a way that requires aggregation before it can be calculated. For example, if a calculation is trying to use values that have not yet been aggregated, it will lead to this error.

    2. Query Design Issues: The query might be designed in such a way that it attempts to perform calculations on a level of detail that is not compatible with the aggregation level of the data being processed.

    3. Hierarchy Issues: If the query involves hierarchies and the calculations are not properly aligned with the hierarchy levels, it can lead to this error.

    4. Data Source Issues: Sometimes, the underlying data source may not support the required calculations due to its structure or the way data is being pulled.

    Solution:

    1. Review Calculated Key Figures: Check the definitions of any calculated key figures in the query. Ensure that they are defined in a way that allows for proper aggregation. If a calculation requires aggregated data, ensure that it is placed in the correct context.

    2. Adjust Query Design: Modify the query to ensure that calculations are performed after the necessary aggregations. This may involve changing the order of operations or the structure of the query.

    3. Use Aggregated Data: If possible, use aggregated data sources or pre-aggregated key figures to avoid the need for calculations before aggregation.

    4. Check Hierarchies: If your query uses hierarchies, ensure that the calculations are compatible with the hierarchy levels being used.

    5. Test with Simplified Queries: If the issue persists, try simplifying the query by removing complex calculations or filters to identify the specific part of the query causing the issue.

    6. Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or community forums for specific guidance on the error and potential fixes.

    Related Information:

    • SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes that might address this specific error or provide additional context.
    • SAP Community: Engage with the SAP Community forums where other users may have encountered and resolved similar issues.
    • BEx Query Designer: Familiarize yourself with the BEx Query Designer, as it provides tools to visualize and adjust the calculations and aggregations in your queries.
