  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message BOM017 - You can only update one bill of material at a time ?

The SAP error message BOM017, which states "You can only update one bill of material at a time," typically occurs when a user attempts to modify multiple bills of materials (BOMs) simultaneously in a transaction that only allows for single BOM updates. This is a common restriction in SAP to ensure data integrity and prevent conflicts during updates.

    Cause:

    1. Multiple BOM Selection: The user has selected more than one BOM for editing or updating in a transaction that only supports single BOM operations.

    Solution:

    1. Single BOM Update: Ensure that you are only selecting one BOM for editing or updating. If you need to make changes to multiple BOMs, you will need to do this one at a time.
    2. Check Transaction Type: Verify that you are using the correct transaction code that supports the operations you intend to perform. For example, if you are using a transaction that is meant for single BOM updates, switch to a different transaction that allows batch processing if necessary.
    3. Review User Permissions: Ensure that your user role has the necessary permissions to perform BOM updates. Sometimes, restrictions can be due to user roles and authorizations.
    4. Use Alternative Methods: If you need to update multiple BOMs, consider using mass change transactions or batch processing tools available in SAP, such as the "Mass Change of BOMs" functionality.
