  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message B1128 - A message type could not be (uniquely) identified ?

The SAP error message B1128, which states "A message type could not be (uniquely) identified," typically occurs in the context of SAP's IDoc (Intermediate Document) processing. This error indicates that the system is unable to determine the correct message type for the IDoc being processed, which can lead to issues in data transfer or integration processes.

    Causes:

    1. Missing or Incorrect Configuration: The message type may not be properly configured in the system. This can happen if the message type is not defined in the relevant IDoc type or if the configuration settings are incomplete.
    2. Multiple Message Types: If there are multiple message types that could potentially match the incoming IDoc, the system may struggle to identify which one to use.
    3. IDoc Structure Issues: The structure of the IDoc may not match the expected format, leading to ambiguity in identifying the message type.
    4. Transport Issues: If the IDoc is being sent from one system to another, there may be transport issues or discrepancies in the configurations between the two systems.
    5. Version Mismatch: There may be a version mismatch between the sender and receiver systems, leading to incompatibility in message types.

    Solutions:

    1. Check Configuration: Verify that the message type is correctly configured in the IDoc settings. This includes checking the message type in the relevant IDoc type and ensuring that all necessary configurations are in place.
    2. Review IDoc Structure: Ensure that the IDoc being sent matches the expected structure for the identified message type. You can use transaction WE19 (IDoc test tool) to simulate and test IDocs.
    3. Check for Duplicates: If there are multiple message types that could match, review the configurations to ensure that there are no duplicates or conflicting definitions.
    4. Transport and Version Check: If the IDoc is being sent between systems, ensure that both systems have compatible configurations and that the necessary transport requests have been successfully imported.
    5. Debugging: Use transaction WE02 or WE05 to analyze the IDoc and check for any errors or warnings that might provide more context on the issue.

    Related Information:

    • IDoc Types and Message Types: Understanding the relationship between IDoc types and message types is crucial. Each IDoc type can have one or more associated message types.
    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as WE30 (IDoc type development), WE20 (Partner profiles), and WE21 (Port definitions) for managing IDocs.
    • SAP Notes: Check SAP Notes for any known issues or patches related to this error message. SAP frequently updates its knowledge base with solutions to common problems.

If the issue persists after checking these areas, it may be beneficial to consult with your SAP Basis or technical team for further investigation.
