  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message AA319 - Posting is not possible, a retirement was already posted on & ?

The SAP error message AA319 ("Posting is not possible; a retirement was already posted on &") typically occurs in the Asset Accounting (FI-AA) module when you attempt to post a retirement for an asset that has already been retired on a specific date. This error indicates that the system has already recorded a retirement transaction for the asset on the specified date, and therefore, it does not allow for another retirement posting on the same date.

    Cause:

    1. Duplicate Retirement Posting: The most common cause is that a retirement transaction has already been executed for the asset on the date you are trying to post.
    2. Incorrect Date: You may be trying to post a retirement for a date that is not valid or is in the past where a retirement has already been recorded.
    3. Asset Status: The asset may be in a status that does not allow further postings, such as being fully retired or disposed of.

    Solution:

    1. Check Previous Transactions: Review the asset history to confirm if a retirement has already been posted on the specified date. You can do this by using transaction codes like AW01N (Asset Explorer) to view the asset's transaction history.
    2. Use a Different Date: If you need to post a retirement, ensure that you are using a date that has not been previously used for a retirement posting.
    3. Correct the Posting: If the retirement was posted incorrectly, you may need to reverse the previous retirement posting using the appropriate transaction (e.g., AB08 for reversing an asset transaction) before making a new retirement posting.
    4. Consult with Finance Team: If you are unsure about the asset's status or the correct procedure, consult with your finance or asset accounting team for guidance.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes:
      • AW01N: Asset Explorer to view asset details and history.
      • AB08: Reverse an asset transaction.
      • ABAVN: Asset retirement by scrapping.
    • Documentation: Refer to SAP Help documentation for Asset Accounting for detailed procedures on asset retirement and postings.
