  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message 60256 - Building number cannot be changed since rooms exist for RU ?

The SAP error message 60256, which states "Building number cannot be changed since rooms exist for RU," typically occurs in the context of SAP Real Estate Management (RE) or SAP Plant Maintenance (PM) when you attempt to change the building number associated with a room or a set of rooms that are already defined in the system.

    Cause:

The error arises because the system has integrity checks in place to prevent changes that could lead to inconsistencies in the data. Specifically, if there are rooms linked to a building, changing the building number could disrupt the relationship between the rooms and the building. This is a safeguard to maintain data integrity.

    Solution:

To resolve this error, you can follow these steps:

    1. Check Room Assignments: Review the rooms that are currently assigned to the building. You can do this by navigating to the relevant transaction in SAP (e.g., transaction code RE80 for Real Estate Management) and checking the room assignments.

    2. Remove Room Assignments: If you need to change the building number, you will first need to remove or reassign the rooms associated with that building. This can be done by:

      • Deleting the room assignments.
      • Moving the rooms to another building if applicable.
    3. Change Building Number: Once there are no rooms linked to the building, you should be able to change the building number without encountering the error.

    4. Reassign Rooms: If necessary, after changing the building number, you can reassign the rooms back to the new building number.

    5. Consult Documentation: If you are unsure about the process or the implications of changing building numbers, consult your organization's SAP documentation or reach out to your SAP support team for guidance.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as RE80 (for Real Estate Management) or other related codes depending on your specific SAP module.
    • Data Integrity: Understand the importance of data integrity in SAP systems, especially in modules dealing with real estate or asset management.
    • User Permissions: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to make changes to building and room assignments in the SAP system.

If the issue persists after following these steps, it may be beneficial to consult with your SAP support team or refer to SAP Notes for any specific patches or updates related to this error message.
