Message text: An entry after the exempt entry exists. Please update/delete it.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.
PurposeYou have created an exemption form for 2020 for an employee who already
has a nonexempt form valid before 2020.
When you create a new exemption entry which is valid for a given period
in 2020, the system will create a third entry as another exemption
record with an end date, which is incorrect. You have created a 2020 W-4
Exemption from withholding entry for an employee who already has a
valid/active record that is not exempt from withholding in 2019.
According to the Department of the Treasury Internal Revenue Service, an
exemption record is only valid for one year period, and employees will
need to submit a new Form W-4 by February 16 of next year. Since an
entry exists after this exempt entry, it may be necessary to:
Update the end date of the exemption entry or update the entry that
starts in the future.
Delete the entry that ends the validity period after 2020.
Example
The employee has the following record:
Start Date: 01.01.2019
End Date: 31.12.9999
Exempt:
You create an exempt record for 2020. After that the system will have
the following records.
Start Date: 01.01.2019 ,,,,
End Date: 31.12.2019,,,,
Exempt:,,
Start Date: 01.01.2019 ,,,,01.01.2020,,
End Date: 31.12.2019,,,,15.02.2021,,
Exempt:,,X
<ZH>NOTE:</> In the example above, the third record will be equal to the
first one. User has to review the third record and adjust the necessary
information (e.g.: Filing Status from first record may not be valid for
the third record).

- An entry after the exempt entry exists. Please update/delete it. ?The SAP error message 5U299 ("An entry after the exempt entry exists. Please update/delete it.") typically occurs in the context of tax determination or tax reporting within the SAP system. This error indicates that there is a conflict in the tax entries related to exempt transactions. Specifically, it suggests that there is an entry that follows an exempt entry in the tax records, which is not allowed according to the tax configuration.
Cause:
- Exempt Entry Followed by Taxable Entry: The error usually arises when there is a taxable entry that comes after an exempt entry in the same transaction or document. This is often against the rules of tax reporting, as it can lead to incorrect tax calculations.
- Incorrect Configuration: The tax configuration in the system may not be set up correctly, leading to conflicts in how tax exemptions are applied.
- Data Entry Errors: Manual data entry errors can also lead to this situation, where the sequence of entries does not comply with the expected tax logic.
Solution:
- Review the Document: Check the document or transaction that triggered the error. Look for the sequence of tax entries and identify where the exempt entry is located. Ensure that no taxable entries follow an exempt entry.
- Update or Delete Entries: If you find that there is a taxable entry after an exempt entry, you will need to either:
- Update the taxable entry to ensure it is correctly classified.
- Delete the taxable entry if it is not needed or if it was entered in error.
- Check Tax Configuration: Review the tax configuration settings in the SAP system to ensure that they are set up correctly. This may involve checking the tax codes, tax categories, and any relevant settings in the tax determination process.
- Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for specific guidance on handling tax exemptions and entries.
- Seek Help from SAP Support: If the issue persists and you cannot resolve it, consider reaching out to SAP support or your internal SAP team for further assistance.
