The SAP error message 42118, which states "You specified the same entry more than once," typically occurs when a user attempts to enter duplicate entries in a field or a list where unique values are expected. This can happen in various contexts, such as during data entry in transactions, configuration settings, or when uploading data.
Cause:
- Duplicate Entries: The most common cause is that the user is trying to enter the same value multiple times in a field that requires unique entries.
- Data Uploads: If you are uploading data (e.g., via LSMW, BAPIs, or other data migration tools), the source data may contain duplicates.
- Configuration Settings: In some configuration settings, certain fields may not allow duplicate values, leading to this error.
Solution:
- Check for Duplicates: Review the entries you are trying to input. Ensure that there are no duplicate values in the fields that require unique entries.
- Data Cleansing: If you are uploading data, clean your source data to remove duplicates before the upload.
- Use Unique Identifiers: If applicable, ensure that you are using unique identifiers for entries, especially in master data or transactional data.
- Review Configuration: If the error occurs in a configuration setting, check the configuration to ensure that it allows for the intended entries without duplicates.
- Error Logs: Check any error logs or messages that may provide additional context about where the duplicates are occurring.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages
(message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.
An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
