What is catalog type in SAP PM - Plant Maintenance?

For example, you can compile all the code groups for malfunction descriptions under one catalog type and all the code groups for causes of malfunction under another. Using catalog types ensures that only the relevant codes can be entered at particular stages in the maintenance notification: Codes for malfunctions that have arisen can be entered in malfunction description fields, codes for completed activities on the item screen.
