What is 'unrestricted-use stock' in SAP MM-IM - Inventory Management?

unrestricted-use stock - Overview

  • Component Name: Inventory Management

  • Description: The valuated stock of a material held and owned by a company that is not subject to usage restrictions.

unrestricted-use stock - Details

  • Term: Unrestricted-Use Stock

    Component: MM-IM Inventory Management

Definition: Unrestricted-use stock in SAP refers to inventory that is fully available and can be used or issued without any restrictions. This stock is not blocked, reserved, or quality inspected, meaning it is ready for immediate consumption, production, or sale.

How It’s Used: In real SAP projects, unrestricted-use stock represents the quantity of materials that can be freely withdrawn for various business processes such as production orders, sales deliveries, or internal consumption. For example, when a warehouse clerk picks materials for a production order, they typically pick from unrestricted-use stock. It is the default stock type for materials after goods receipt if no quality inspection or blocking is required.

    Important Configuration:

    • Stock types are managed in the Inventory Management customizing under T-code OMS2 (Define Stock Types).
    • Material master data (MM02) reflects stock quantities by stock type, including unrestricted-use stock.
    • Movement types (configured in T-code OMJJ) determine how stock is posted between stock types, e.g., from quality inspection stock to unrestricted-use stock after inspection is complete.
    • Stock determination and availability checks (e.g., ATP) consider unrestricted-use stock as available stock.
