What is Kerberos in SAP BC-SEC - Security?

SAP Term: Kerberos

  • Component: BC-SEC

  • Component Name: Security

  • Description: An authentication system developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT. The Kerberos system uses symmetric cryptography for providing its protection. An authenticated user is issued a ticket from the Kerberos server that contains a unique key that is encrypted with the user's password. The ticket is then used to identify the user and the enclosed key is used to encrypt the data being transferred.

  • Key Concepts:
Kerberos is an authentication protocol used by SAP systems to provide secure access to resources. It is part of the BC-SEC Security component of SAP and is based on a client-server model. It uses a combination of symmetric key cryptography and tickets to authenticate users and grant them access to resources.

    How to use it:
Kerberos is used in SAP systems to authenticate users and grant them access to resources. It works by having the user request a ticket from the Kerberos server, which is then used to authenticate the user and grant them access. The ticket is encrypted using a symmetric key, which is shared between the user and the Kerberos server.

    Tips & Tricks:
When using Kerberos, it is important to ensure that the symmetric key used for encryption is kept secure. Additionally, it is important to ensure that the Kerberos server is properly configured and maintained in order to ensure that authentication requests are handled securely.

    Related Information:
Kerberos is part of the BC-SEC Security component of SAP, which also includes other authentication protocols such as SAML and OAuth. Additionally, Kerberos can be used in conjunction with other security measures such as two-factor authentication for added security.
