Switchover software SOSW reduces unplanned downtime by enabling rapid resumption of a failed service on a substitute host. SAP system services that can be susceptible to failure because they cannot be configured on multiple hosts that is, DBMS, enqueue and message services can benefit from the extra resilience of SOSW. The substitute host must be sufficiently powerful to support the additional workload following switchover. SOSW can also reduce planned downtime, when a deliberate switchover is made for maintenance purposes that is, without any failure. The term "failover" is sometimes used to refer exclusively to the case when failure has occurred. However, this usage is not universal.
