  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message WXP697 - Last promotion unavailable ?

    SAP Error Message:
    WXP697 - Last promotion unavailable

    Cause:

The error message WXP697 - Last promotion unavailable typically occurs in SAP when the system is unable to retrieve or find the last promotion data for a particular object or record. This often happens in scenarios involving workflow, document promotion, or version management where the system expects a previous promotion/version but cannot locate it.

    Common causes include:

    • The object or document has never been promoted before, so no "last promotion" exists.
    • Data inconsistency or missing entries in the promotion/version tables.
    • Incorrect or incomplete configuration of promotion procedures or workflow steps.
    • Authorization issues preventing access to the promotion data.
    • Transport or system copy issues where promotion history was not carried over.

    Solution:

To resolve the WXP697 error, consider the following steps:

    1. Check if a Last Promotion Exists:
Verify whether the object/document has been promoted previously. If it is the first promotion, the system might not find a "last promotion," which could be expected behavior depending on the process.

    2. Review Promotion/Version Data:
Use transaction codes related to the object (e.g., version management, workflow logs) to check if promotion data exists and is consistent.

    3. Check Configuration:
Ensure that the promotion procedures and workflow steps are correctly configured. For example, in workflow scenarios, verify that the promotion steps are properly defined and linked.

    4. Authorization Check:
Confirm that the user or process has the necessary authorizations to access promotion data.

    5. Data Consistency and Table Checks:
Run consistency checks on relevant tables (e.g., those storing promotion/version data). If inconsistencies are found, consider data correction or restoration from backups.

    6. System Transport/Copy Considerations:
If the error appeared after a system copy or transport, verify that all relevant data and customizing have been transported correctly.

    7. SAP Notes and Support:
Search for SAP Notes related to WXP697 for specific patches or corrections. Sometimes, this error is known and fixed in support packages.
