  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message WV318 - You cannot post to condition type (here &1) with a reference condition ?

The SAP error message WV318 indicates that you are trying to post to a condition type that is defined as a reference condition. Reference conditions are typically used in pricing procedures to refer to other conditions rather than being directly posted to. This error usually occurs in the context of pricing in sales documents, purchase orders, or other transactions where conditions are applied.

    Cause:

    The error occurs when:

    1. You attempt to enter or modify a condition record for a condition type that is set up as a reference condition in the pricing procedure.
    2. The system does not allow direct postings to reference conditions because they are meant to derive their values from other conditions.

    Solution:

To resolve this error, you can consider the following steps:

    1. Check the Pricing Procedure:

      • Go to the pricing procedure configuration (Transaction code: V/08).
      • Identify the condition type that is causing the error (indicated by &1 in the error message).
      • Verify if it is indeed set as a reference condition.
    2. Modify the Condition Type:

      • If you need to post values directly to this condition type, you may need to change its configuration to allow direct postings. This can involve changing its settings in the pricing procedure.
      • However, be cautious with this approach, as it may affect other areas of your pricing logic.
    3. Use the Correct Condition Type:

      • If you need to post a value, consider using a different condition type that is not a reference condition. Ensure that the condition type you are using is appropriate for the type of transaction you are processing.
    4. Consult Documentation:

      • Review SAP documentation or consult with your SAP functional consultant to understand the implications of changing condition types or pricing procedures.
    5. Check User Authorizations:

      • Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to make changes to pricing conditions or procedures.

    Related Information:

    • Condition Types: In SAP, condition types are used to define how prices, discounts, surcharges, and other pricing elements are calculated in sales and purchasing documents.
    • Pricing Procedure: A pricing procedure is a sequence of condition types that determine how the final price is calculated for a transaction.
    • Reference Conditions: These are used to refer to other conditions, allowing for more flexible pricing strategies without duplicating condition records.

If the issue persists after following these steps, it may be beneficial to engage with your SAP support team or a consultant who can provide more tailored assistance based on your specific configuration and business processes.
