  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message WS357 - Run with name & already exists (see long text) ?

    SAP Error Message:
WS357 - Run with name & already exists (see long text)

    Cause:

This error occurs when you try to create or schedule a background job (or a batch input session) with a name that already exists in the system. SAP requires unique names for certain objects like batch input sessions, background jobs, or runs to avoid conflicts and ensure proper identification and processing.

In particular, the message indicates that a run (often related to batch input sessions or batch jobs) with the specified name already exists in the system, and therefore, the system cannot create another one with the same name.

    When does it typically occur?

    • When creating a batch input session with a name that is already used by an existing session.
    • When scheduling a background job with a job name that is already active or exists.
    • When running batch processes that require unique run/session names.

    Solution:

    1. Check Existing Runs/Sessions:

      • Use transaction SM35 (Batch Input: Session Overview) to check if a batch input session with the same name already exists.
      • Use transaction SM37 (Job Monitoring) to check if a background job with the same name is already scheduled or running.
    2. Delete or Rename Existing Runs:

      • If the existing run/session is no longer needed, delete it to free up the name.
      • Alternatively, use a different, unique name for the new run/session/job you want to create.
    3. Use Unique Naming Conventions:

      • Implement a naming convention that ensures uniqueness, for example, by appending timestamps or user IDs to the run/session name.
    4. Check for Locked or Stuck Sessions:

      • Sometimes, sessions or jobs may be stuck or locked. Investigate and release or delete such sessions if necessary.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes:

      • SM35 – Batch Input: Session Overview
      • SM37 – Job Monitoring
      • SM36 – Define Background Job
    • SAP Notes:

      • Check SAP Notes related to batch input sessions or job scheduling if the problem persists.
    • Long Text of the Message:

      • The long text usually provides additional details about the conflicting run/session name and may suggest checking existing sessions or jobs.

    Summary:

The error WS357 indicates a naming conflict with an existing run/session/job. To resolve it, identify and remove or rename the existing object or choose a unique name for the new run/session/job.

If you provide the exact context (e.g., transaction or program where the error occurs), I can give more tailored advice.
