Smart SAP Assistant

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message WR100 - Material & is not a generic material ?

    SAP Error Message:
WR100: Material & is not a generic material

    Cause:

This error occurs when a material is expected to be a generic material in a particular process or transaction, but the material entered is not flagged or maintained as a generic material in the system.

    • Generic materials in SAP are materials that represent a group or category of materials rather than a specific individual material.
    • Certain processes, such as creating sales orders, quotations, or using specific pricing or classification functions, may require the material to be generic.
    • If the material master data does not have the generic material indicator set, or if the material is not maintained as generic in the system, this error is triggered.

    Solution:

    1. Check Material Master Data:

      • Go to transaction MM03 (Display Material).
      • Enter the material number and check the Basic Data or Classification tab.
      • Verify if the material is maintained as a generic material.
    2. Set Generic Material Indicator:

      • If the material should be generic, update the material master to mark it as generic.
      • Use transaction MM02 (Change Material).
      • Navigate to the relevant view (often Basic Data or Classification).
      • Set the Generic Material indicator or maintain the generic material field as required.
      • Save the changes.
    3. Use Correct Material:

      • If the process requires a generic material, ensure you are using the correct generic material number.
      • If the material is not supposed to be generic, check the business process or configuration to ensure the correct material type is used.
    4. Check Configuration:

      • Sometimes, the error can be due to configuration settings in sales or distribution (SD) or other modules where generic materials are expected.
      • Verify the settings in pricing procedures, material determination, or classification that might require generic materials.

    Related Information:

    • Generic Material Concept:
Generic materials are used to represent a group of materials with similar characteristics. They are often used in sales and distribution for pricing or classification purposes.

    • Material Master Views:
The generic material indicator is usually maintained in the Basic Data 1 view or in the Classification view depending on the SAP version and customization.

    • Transactions to Check:

      • MM03 – Display Material
      • MM02 – Change Material
      • VA01 – Create Sales Order (where the error might appear)
      • VK11 – Maintain Pricing Conditions (if related to pricing)
    • SAP Notes and Documentation:
Check SAP Notes for your specific SAP version if the problem persists, as there might be patches or updates related to generic material handling.

If you provide the exact transaction or scenario where the error occurs, I can help with more specific guidance.
