  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message W_007 - Empties materials are not allowed as BOM header materials ?

Certainly! Here's a detailed explanation for the SAP error message:

    SAP Error Message:

W_007 - Empties materials are not allowed as BOM header materials

    Cause:

This warning occurs when you try to create or use a Bill of Materials (BOM) where the header material is classified as an "empty" material (Empties). In SAP, "empties" typically refer to packaging materials or containers that are not supposed to be used as the main product or assembly in a BOM.

    • The system restricts the use of empties as BOM header materials because BOM headers are expected to be finished products or assemblies, not packaging or container materials.
    • This is a business rule configured in the system to prevent incorrect BOM structuring.

    Explanation:

    • BOM Header Material: The main material for which the BOM is created.
    • Empty Material: Usually packaging materials like bottles, cans, boxes, pallets, etc., which are not processed or assembled but used for packaging or transport.
    • SAP standard practice is to prevent empties from being BOM headers to avoid logical inconsistencies in production or planning.

    Solution:

    1. Check Material Type:

      • Verify if the material you are trying to use as the BOM header is indeed classified as an empty.
      • You can check this in the material master (transaction MM03) under the Basic Data or Classification views.
    2. Use Appropriate Material:

      • If the material is an empty, do not use it as a BOM header.
      • Instead, create the BOM for the actual finished product or assembly material.
    3. Change Material Type (if applicable):

      • If the material was incorrectly classified as an empty, you may consider changing its material type or usage.
      • This requires careful consideration and usually involves coordination with master data management.
    4. Override or Customize (not recommended):

      • In some cases, if business processes require it, the system behavior can be customized via user exits or configuration.
      • However, this is generally not recommended as it can lead to inconsistent BOM data.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes:

      • CS01 - Create BOM
      • CS02 - Change BOM
      • CS03 - Display BOM
      • MM03 - Display Material Master
    • Material Types:

      • Packaging materials are often assigned specific material types like VERP (Packaging Material).
      • Finished products usually have material types like FERT or HALB.
    • SAP Notes / Documentation:

      • Check SAP Help Portal or OSS Notes for any updates or specific notes related to BOM and material types.
      • Example SAP Note: Sometimes SAP releases notes related to BOM validations and material type restrictions.

    Summary:

    • Cause: Trying to assign an empty (packaging) material as a BOM header.
    • Solution: Use a non-empty (finished or semi-finished) material as BOM header; verify and correct material master data.
    • Impact: Prevents incorrect BOM creation and ensures logical consistency in production and planning.
