  • What causes this issue?

The two partners of the value assignment in a binding definition must
be defined by <ZH>identical data types</> or at least <ZH>compatible
    data types</>.
Data types which are expressed via a <ZH>field reference</> are
"compatible" if the source element is shorter than the target element
    for the same data type.
Data types which are expressed via an <ZH>object reference</> are
    compatible:
if no object type is explicitly specified for the target element
(assignment: specified object reference ==> unspecified object
    reference)
if the source element references a subtype of the object type which is
    referenced by the target element
(assignment: object reference subtype ==> object reference supertype)

    How to fix this error?

You should use F4 input help for the binding definition.
You should only select container elements which F4 input help shows
have the following characteristics: "Data type identical" or
    "Compatible".

Smart SAP Assistant

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message W8108 - Source & corresponds to object type & and not & ?

Certainly! Here's a detailed explanation for the SAP error message:

    SAP Error Message:

W8108: Source & corresponds to object type & and not &

    Meaning / Cause:

This warning message occurs when there is a mismatch between the object type of a source object and the expected object type in a particular SAP transaction or process.

    • The message indicates that the source object you are trying to use or reference corresponds to a certain object type (the first &), but the system expected it to be of a different object type (the second &).
    • This usually happens in scenarios involving object linking, assignment, or referencing, such as in Asset Accounting, Document Management System (DMS), or other modules where objects are linked by type.
    • For example, you might be trying to assign a document or asset that is of type "Material" but the system expects an object of type "Equipment".

    Typical Scenarios:

    • Assigning or linking objects in Asset Accounting (e.g., linking an asset to a cost center or order).
    • Document Management System (DMS) where documents are linked to business objects.
    • Workflow or Business Object Repository (BOR) where object types must match.
    • Custom developments or enhancements where object types are validated.

    Solution / How to Fix:

    1. Check the Object Types:

      • Identify the source object and its actual object type.
      • Verify the expected object type in the transaction or process you are performing.
    2. Correct the Object Reference:

      • Use the correct object that matches the expected object type.
      • If you are linking or assigning, ensure the source object is of the correct type.
    3. Review Custom Code or Configuration:

      • If this occurs in a custom program or enhancement, check the logic that determines or validates object types.
      • Adjust the code or configuration to handle the correct object types.
    4. Consult SAP Documentation or Notes:

      • Sometimes, this warning is harmless and can be ignored if the process continues correctly.
      • However, if it causes errors or incorrect processing, further investigation is needed.

    Additional Information:

    • The placeholders (&) in the message are replaced at runtime with actual values, e.g.:
      • Source 12345 corresponds to object type "BUS1001" and not "BUS1002".
    • You can use transaction SWO1 (Business Object Builder) to check object types and their relationships.
    • Use transaction SE91 to look up the message text and get more details.
    • If the warning appears during a standard SAP process, check OSS notes or SAP Support for known issues.

    Aspect Description
