  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message W7079 - Choose a class type for grouping together plants ?

    SAP Error Message:
W7079 - Choose a class type for grouping together plants

    Cause:

This warning message appears when you are trying to group plants together in SAP (typically in the context of classification or grouping in Logistics Execution, Warehouse Management, or Plant Maintenance), but you have not specified a class type for the grouping.

In SAP, grouping objects like plants requires assigning them to a class. The class type defines the category of the class and determines the characteristics and objects that can be assigned to it. Without selecting a proper class type, the system cannot proceed with grouping because it does not know how to classify the plants.

    When does it occur?

    • When creating or maintaining plant groups in the classification system.
    • When setting up grouping criteria for plants in logistics or master data.
    • When using transactions or customizing steps that involve plant classification but the class type is missing or not selected.

    Solution:

    1. Select a Class Type:

      • When prompted by the message, choose an appropriate class type for grouping plants.
      • Common class types for grouping plants are:
        • 001 (Material classes)
        • 003 (Batch classes)
        • 017 (Plant classes)
        • Or any custom class type defined in your system for plant grouping.
    2. Check Class Type Configuration:

      • Go to transaction CL02 or CL03 to check existing classes and their types.
      • Use transaction CL01 to create a new class with the appropriate class type if none exists.
    3. Assign Plants to Classes:

      • Assign the plants to the class you selected or created.
      • This can be done via classification transactions or master data maintenance.
    4. Customizing:

      • If you are in customizing (SPRO), ensure that the class types for plant grouping are properly defined and assigned.
      • Check under Logistics General ? Classification System ? Class Types for relevant settings.

    Additional Information:

    • Class Types in SAP are used to categorize classes and control which objects can be assigned to them.
    • The choice of class type depends on the business process and the type of objects you want to group.
    • This message is a warning (W), so it may not stop the process but indicates that grouping cannot be done properly without selecting a class type.
