How To Fix VO240 - Item & does not contain a plant yet

SAP Error Message - Details

  • Message type: E = Error

  • Message class: VO - W&S: Rough workload forecast + picking wave

  • Message number: 240

  • Message text: Item & does not contain a plant yet

  • Show details Hide details
  • What causes this issue?

Within the respective document, item &V1& was entered. This item
    contains material &V2&.
For the respective item, however, no plant was specified or derived.

    System Response

The plant is required in order - together with the storage location -
to derive the feature 'warehouse number'. Since no plant is contained
in the item, the system cannot determine a warehouse number either.
The workload data is updated with the initial value for the feature
    'warehouse number'.

    How to fix this error?

You can change the sales document item &V1& subsequently. If a plant is
contained in the item after you have saved it, the respective database
record with the initial value for the feature 'warehouse number' is
reduced by the load from the item.
The system attempts to derive a warehouse number from the new plant. If
this is successful, the system also creates a new database record with
the item workload. If this is not the case, the system increases the
initial value for the warehouse number in the database record by the
    load from the item.

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message VO240 - Item & does not contain a plant yet ?

The SAP error message VO240: "Item & does not contain a plant yet" typically occurs in the context of Sales and Distribution (SD) or Materials Management (MM) modules when processing sales documents, deliveries, or purchase orders.

    Cause:

    • The error indicates that the item in the sales document or delivery does not have a plant assigned.
    • In SAP, the plant is a mandatory organizational unit for inventory management, production, and logistics execution.
    • If the plant field is missing or not determined for an item, the system cannot proceed with processes like delivery creation, availability check, or goods movement.
    • This can happen due to:
      • Missing or incomplete master data (e.g., material master not maintained for the plant).
      • Incorrect or incomplete sales document item data.
      • Missing configuration in the sales document item category or schedule line determination.
      • Issues in the automatic determination of the plant (e.g., no valid shipping point or plant assignment).

    Solution:

    1. Check the Sales Document Item:

      • Go to the sales order or delivery and verify if the plant is assigned to the item.
      • Use transaction VA03 (Display Sales Order) or VL03N (Display Delivery) and check the item details.
    2. Maintain Plant in the Item:

      • If the plant is missing, assign the correct plant manually or ensure the system can determine it automatically.
      • The plant is usually derived from the shipping point or material master.
    3. Check Material Master:

      • Use transaction MM03 to check if the material is extended to the relevant plant.
      • If not, extend the material to the plant using MM01 or MM02.
    4. Check Configuration:

      • Verify the item category and schedule line category configuration in SPRO under Sales and Distribution ? Sales ? Sales Documents ? Sales Document Item ? Define Item Categories.
      • Ensure that the item category allows plant determination and that schedule lines are correctly maintained.
    5. Check Shipping Point Determination:

      • The shipping point is linked to the plant; if shipping point determination is incorrect, the plant may not be assigned.
      • Use transaction OVXD to check shipping point determination.
    6. Automatic Plant Determination:

      • Ensure that the system can determine the plant automatically based on the sales area, shipping point, and material master.
      • If automatic determination fails, manual entry or correction of master data/configuration is needed.
