What causes this issue?

You cannot group the selected nodes due to one of the following reasons:
Metadata (material and object dependencies) of the selected nodes do not
match.
Selected nodes are not assigned to the same operation
Selected nodes are assigned to same operation but their metadata
(material and object dependencies) do not match

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.
