What causes this issue?

In Advanced Variant Configuration the configuration becomes
inconsistent:
- if a characteristic is excluded by a precondition
- and the characteristic is mandatory (either by a selection condition,
or it is flagged as mandatory in the master data of the characteristic)

System Response

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.
