Message text: Hierarchy names can be inserted only at the top level
You want to create a new hierarchy name, but you selected an entity that
is not an existing hierarchy name. This is not possible, since hierarchy
names can only be added to a hierarchy at the highest level, that is,
not below another hierarchy name.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.
Select an existing hierarchy name. The new hierarchy name is then
created on the same (highest) level under the selected hierarchy name.

- Hierarchy names can be inserted only at the top level ?The SAP error message USMD2308, which states "Hierarchy names can be inserted only at the top level," typically occurs in the context of SAP Master Data Governance (MDG) when working with hierarchies. This error indicates that you are trying to insert a hierarchy node at a level that is not allowed, specifically not at the top level of the hierarchy.
Cause:
- Hierarchy Structure: The error arises when you attempt to create or insert a new hierarchy node (or name) at a level other than the top level. In SAP MDG, hierarchy nodes must be structured in a specific way, and only the top level can have new names inserted.
- Incorrect Node Selection: You may have selected a node that is not the root or top-level node when trying to add a new hierarchy name.
- Configuration Issues: There may be configuration settings in the hierarchy that restrict the addition of new names at certain levels.
Solution:
- Insert at Top Level: Ensure that you are trying to insert the hierarchy name at the top level of the hierarchy. Navigate to the top node and attempt to add the new name from there.
- Review Hierarchy Structure: Check the existing hierarchy structure to confirm where you are trying to insert the new name. Make sure you are following the correct hierarchy rules.
- Consult Documentation: Refer to the SAP documentation or help resources for guidance on how to properly manage hierarchies in your specific version of SAP MDG.
- Check User Permissions: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to make changes to the hierarchy. Sometimes, restrictions can be due to user roles and authorizations.
