What causes this issue?

No characteristic was selected for the data columns. However, this is
necessary since the key figures are to be displayed in the lead column.

System Response

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

How to fix this error?

Select a characteristic for the data area. If a selection for the data
area is not possible for any of the characteristics, then you must
define a selection (range of individual values) for (at least) one
characteristic in the planning level.
