  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message UMK169 - The provider measure '&1' is locked by user &2 ?

The SAP error message UMK169 indicates that a specific provider measure (in this case, represented by &1) is locked by a user (represented by &2). This typically occurs in the context of SAP BW (Business Warehouse) or SAP HANA when a user is trying to perform an operation on a measure that is currently locked for editing or processing by another user.

    Cause:

    1. User Locking: The measure is being edited or processed by another user, which prevents other users from making changes or performing certain operations on it.
    2. Transaction in Progress: A transaction that involves the measure is currently in progress, leading to a lock being placed on it.
    3. System Configuration: Certain configurations or settings in the system may lead to measures being locked during specific operations.

    Solution:

    1. Identify the Locking User: Check who is currently locking the measure. You can do this by using transaction codes like SM12 (to view lock entries) in SAP. Look for the user ID mentioned in the error message.
    2. Contact the User: If possible, contact the user who is locking the measure and ask them to complete their operation or release the lock.
    3. Wait for Completion: If the locking user is performing a legitimate operation, you may need to wait until they finish.
    4. Force Unlock (if necessary): If the locking user is not available and you need immediate access, you can consider using transaction SM12 to delete the lock entry. However, this should be done with caution, as it may lead to data inconsistencies or loss of unsaved changes.
    5. Review System Settings: If this issue occurs frequently, review the system settings and configurations related to locking mechanisms to ensure they are appropriate for your business processes.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as SM12 (to view and manage lock entries) and SM21 (to check system logs for any related issues).
    • User Roles and Permissions: Ensure that user roles and permissions are set correctly to avoid unnecessary locks.
    • Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or support notes for more detailed information on locking mechanisms and best practices in your specific SAP environment.

If the problem persists or if you are unsure about taking any actions, it is advisable to consult with your SAP Basis or technical support team for further assistance.
