Message type: E = Error
Message class: TD - SAPscript: Text editor, composer, forms, styles and fonts
Message number: 716
Message text: Continue search first and then replace
You have initiated the function Replace. Your cursor (the point where
you are currently working) is not, however, positioned at the beginning
of the search term.
The replacement is not carried out.
When you initiate a search procedure (F19 = Search backwards, F18 =
Search forwards), the system automatically positions your cursor at the
next occurrence of the search term. You can then replace it (F16 =
Confirm replacement).
You can also position the cursor yourself at the beginning of the
search term.

TD716
- Continue search first and then replace ?The SAP error message TD716 ("Continue search first and then replace") typically occurs in the context of text management in SAP, particularly when dealing with text elements in various objects like programs, function modules, or other repository objects. This error indicates that the system is expecting a search operation to be completed before a replace operation can be executed.
Cause:
The error usually arises when:
- A user attempts to replace text without first performing a search for the text they want to replace.
- The system requires a search to identify the text elements that need to be modified before any replacement can occur.
Solution:
To resolve the TD716 error, follow these steps:
Perform a Search: Before attempting to replace any text, ensure that you have conducted a search for the specific text you want to modify. This can usually be done through the text management interface in SAP.
Check Text Elements: Make sure that the text elements you are trying to replace actually exist. If the search does not return any results, there may be no text to replace.
Use the Correct Transaction: Ensure you are using the appropriate transaction code for text management (e.g., SE63 for translation or SE78 for SAPscript forms).
Follow the Workflow: If you are using a specific workflow or tool for text replacement, ensure that you are following the correct sequence of operations as required by that tool.
Consult Documentation: If you are unsure about the process, refer to SAP documentation or help resources related to text management for guidance.
Related Information:
If the issue persists after following these steps, consider reaching out to your SAP support team or consulting with an SAP expert for further assistance.
