Message class: RT - Monitoring infrastructure MSG and alert texts
Message number: 221
Message text: Number of update2 work processes
Technical constraints:
There does not necessarily have to be any work processes of the Update
2 type (low-priority update). However, as high-priority updates could
be delayed without them, we recommend that you configure at least one
work process of the Update 2 type for each system.
You can set the number of these work processes using the system
parameter <ZH>rdisp/wp_no_vb2</>.
For more information about this topic, see SAP Note 39412 (How many
work processes to configure)

RT221
- Number of update2 work processes ?The SAP error message RT221, which indicates "Number of update2 work processes," typically relates to issues with the configuration or availability of update work processes in the SAP system. This error can occur when the system is unable to allocate the required number of update work processes for handling update requests, which can lead to performance issues or delays in processing.
Causes:
- Insufficient Work Processes: The number of update work processes configured in the system may be too low to handle the current workload.
- System Load: High system load or a large number of concurrent update requests can exhaust the available update work processes.
- Configuration Issues: Incorrect configuration settings in the instance profile for update work processes.
- Long-running Transactions: If there are long-running transactions or locks on database tables, it can prevent the update work processes from completing their tasks.
- Resource Constraints: Limited system resources (CPU, memory, etc.) can affect the performance and availability of work processes.
Solutions:
Increase Update Work Processes:
- You can increase the number of update work processes in the instance profile. This can be done by modifying the
rdisp/wp_no_update
parameter in the instance profile.- After making changes, restart the SAP instance for the changes to take effect.
Monitor System Load:
- Use transaction codes like SM50 or SM66 to monitor the current workload and identify any long-running processes that may be blocking update work processes.
- Analyze the workload and consider optimizing or rescheduling heavy transactions.
Check for Locks:
- Use transaction code SM12 to check for any locks that may be preventing update processes from completing. If necessary, release locks that are no longer needed.
Review Configuration:
- Ensure that the configuration settings for work processes are appropriate for your system's workload. This includes checking the instance profile and adjusting parameters as needed.
System Resources:
- Ensure that the server has adequate resources (CPU, memory, disk I/O) to handle the workload. If necessary, consider upgrading hardware or optimizing the system.
Performance Tuning:
- Review and optimize database performance, as slow database responses can lead to delays in update processing.
