  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message RM140 - No preliminary costing possible with nonvaluated make-to-order production ?

The SAP error message RM140 "No preliminary costing possible with nonvaluated make-to-order production" typically occurs in the context of production planning and costing in SAP, particularly when dealing with make-to-order (MTO) production scenarios. This error indicates that the system cannot perform preliminary costing for a production order that is set up as non-valuated.

    Cause:

    1. Non-Valuated Stock: The production order is set up for non-valuated stock, meaning that the system does not track the value of the stock. This is common in certain scenarios where the focus is on quantity rather than value.
    2. Costing Variant Settings: The costing variant used may not be configured to handle non-valuated production orders.
    3. Missing Master Data: There may be missing or incorrect master data related to the material, such as the valuation class or costing information.
    4. Order Type Configuration: The order type used for the production order may not be configured to allow preliminary costing.

    Solution:

    1. Check Order Type Configuration: Ensure that the order type used for the production order is configured correctly in the system to allow for preliminary costing. This can be done in the configuration settings for production orders.
    2. Review Costing Variant: Verify that the costing variant being used is appropriate for the type of production order. You may need to create or modify a costing variant that supports non-valuated production.
    3. Material Master Data: Check the material master data for the relevant materials. Ensure that the valuation class and other costing-related fields are correctly set up.
    4. Change Order Type: If necessary, consider changing the order type to one that supports preliminary costing if the business process allows for it.
    5. Consult Documentation: Review SAP documentation or consult with your SAP support team for specific configuration settings related to your version of SAP.

    Related Information:

    • SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes that may address this specific error or provide additional guidance on configuration.
    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as CO01 (Create Production Order), CO02 (Change Production Order), and CK11N (Create Material Cost Estimate) to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
    • User Exits and BAdIs: In some cases, custom logic implemented through user exits or BAdIs may affect costing behavior. Review any custom code that may be impacting the process.

By addressing the above points, you should be able to resolve the RM140 error and successfully perform preliminary costing for your make-to-order production orders.
