Message text: Too many nodes: Whole subtree not expanded
Expanding the sub-tree results in too much data being transferred to the
front end. This can lead to a memory overload in the front end.
Expanding the subtree was terminated.
Expand the individual nodes. You can also expand the subtrees, provided
that the maximum number of nodes is not exceeded (usually 1000 nodes).
The large number of nodes can cause performance problems on the front
end. However, this also is largely dependent on the hardware
constellation for the front end.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

RH503
- Too many nodes: Whole subtree not expanded ?The SAP error message RH503: Too many nodes: Whole subtree not expanded typically occurs in the context of SAP HR (Human Resources) or SAP HCM (Human Capital Management) when dealing with organizational structures or hierarchies. This error indicates that the system is unable to expand a particular subtree in the organizational structure because it contains too many nodes (or elements), which exceeds the system's limits for display or processing.
Cause:
- Large Organizational Structure: The most common cause of this error is that the organizational unit or structure you are trying to expand contains a very large number of nodes. This can happen in organizations with complex hierarchies or many employees.
- System Limitations: SAP has certain limitations on how many nodes can be displayed or processed at once. When the number of nodes exceeds this limit, the system throws this error.
- Configuration Settings: There may be specific configuration settings in the SAP system that limit the number of nodes that can be displayed.
Solution:
- Limit the Scope: Instead of trying to expand the entire subtree, try to limit the scope of your query. For example, you can filter the organizational units or focus on a specific area of the hierarchy.
- Use Different Views: If available, use different views or reports that might provide the information you need without requiring the expansion of the entire subtree.
- Adjust System Settings: If you have the necessary permissions, you can check the system settings related to the display of organizational structures. Consult with your SAP Basis or technical team to see if adjustments can be made to increase the limits.
- Break Down the Hierarchy: If possible, consider breaking down the organizational structure into smaller, more manageable parts. This can help in avoiding the error when trying to view or manipulate the data.
- Consult SAP Notes: Check the SAP Support Portal for any relevant SAP Notes or updates that might address this issue. There may be patches or updates that can help resolve the problem.
Related Information:
If the problem persists after trying the above solutions, it may be necessary to involve your SAP support team or consult with SAP directly for further assistance.
