  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message R7B318 - Do not select template and "based on ..." at the same time ?

The SAP error message R7B318, which states "Do not select template and 'based on ...' at the same time," typically occurs in the context of SAP BW (Business Warehouse) or SAP BI (Business Intelligence) when you are trying to create or modify a query or report. This error indicates that there is a conflict in the selection criteria you are using.

    Cause:

The error arises when you attempt to use both a template and a "based on" option simultaneously in a query or report. In SAP BW, templates are predefined settings that can be applied to queries, while the "based on" option allows you to create a new query based on an existing one. The system does not allow both options to be selected at the same time because they serve different purposes and can lead to ambiguity in the query definition.

    Solution:

To resolve this error, you need to ensure that you are only using one of the two options at a time. Here are the steps you can take:

    1. Review Your Query Settings: Go to the query definition or the area where you are encountering the error. Check if both the template and the "based on" option are selected.

    2. Deselect One Option:

      • If you want to use a template, make sure to deselect the "based on" option.
      • Conversely, if you want to create a query based on an existing one, ensure that you do not select a template.
    3. Save Changes: After making the necessary adjustments, save your changes and try to execute the query again.

    4. Test the Query: Run the query to ensure that it works without any errors.

    Related Information:

    • Templates in SAP BW: Templates are used to standardize the layout and settings of queries. They can help in maintaining consistency across reports.
    • "Based on" Functionality: This allows users to create new queries that inherit properties from existing queries, which can be useful for modifying or extending existing reports.
    • SAP Documentation: For more detailed information, refer to the official SAP documentation or help resources related to query design in SAP BW/BI.

If you continue to experience issues after following these steps, consider reaching out to your SAP support team or consulting the SAP community for further assistance.
