How To Fix R7B229 - Characteristic &1: Error when specifying new SIDS for attributes

SAP Error Message - Details

  • Message type: E = Error

  • Message class: R7B - BW Metadata (InfoCube, InfoObject, InfoObject catalog)

  • Message number: 229

  • Message text: Characteristic &1: Error when specifying new SIDS for attributes

  • Show details Hide details
  • What causes this issue?

When activating characteristics, the missing SIDs had to be created for
the new navigation attributes for characteristic &V1&. In doing so, an
    error occurred.
The cause of the error is usually a missing number range interval for
the SIDs. This interval cannot be automatically created if you are not
in a BW client. This is often the case with the subsequent processing
of the import of transports, because this generally occurs in client
    000.

    System Response

    Characteristic &V1& cannot be created.

    How to fix this error?

    You have the following options:
Import the transport request in the BW client. The error will not
occur, because the number range interval can be automatically created.
In the target system, execute the
    <DS:REPN.RSDG_AFTER_IMPORT_FOR_CORR>Program RSDG_AFTER_IMPORT_FOR_CORR
</> with the aborted transport request. This request repeats the
subsequent processing of the transport request in the BW client.
Check whether the navigation attributes for characteristic &V1& already
have an interval for their number range object. You can see this in the
characteristic maintenance (<DS:TRAN.RSD1>transaction RSD1</>) in the
menu Additions -> Number Range Object -> For SIDs. Manually activate
all characteristics that do not yet have a number range object. This is
    created during the activation.
Afterwards, activate the &V1& characteristic, with which the error
originally occurred, or repeat the import of the transport request.

    Procedure for System Administrators

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message R7B229 - Characteristic &1: Error when specifying new SIDS for attributes ?

The SAP error message R7B229 indicates that there is an issue with specifying new SID (Surrogate ID) values for attributes in the context of data modeling or data transfer in SAP BW (Business Warehouse). This error typically arises when there is a problem with the characteristics or attributes being processed, particularly when trying to assign new SIDs to them.

    Cause:

    1. Invalid Characteristic: The characteristic specified may not exist or may not be properly defined in the InfoObject.
    2. Data Inconsistency: There may be inconsistencies in the data that prevent the system from assigning new SIDs.
    3. Missing Master Data: The master data for the characteristic may be incomplete or missing, which is necessary for SID assignment.
    4. Technical Issues: There could be technical issues related to the database or the BW system itself, such as locks or corruption.
    5. Incorrect SID Generation: The process for generating new SIDs may not be correctly configured or executed.

    Solution:

    1. Check Characteristic Definition: Verify that the characteristic (&1) is correctly defined in the InfoObject and that it exists in the system.
    2. Review Master Data: Ensure that the master data for the characteristic is complete and consistent. You may need to load or update the master data.
    3. Reprocess Data: If the error occurred during a data load, try reprocessing the data load request. Ensure that the data source is correct and that there are no issues with the data itself.
    4. Check for Locks: Investigate if there are any locks on the database tables that could be causing the issue. You may need to release these locks.
    5. SID Generation Settings: Review the settings for SID generation in the InfoObject and ensure they are correctly configured.
    6. Use Transaction Codes: Utilize transaction codes like RSA1 (Data Warehousing Workbench) to analyze the InfoObject and its attributes, and RSD1 to check the characteristics.
    7. Consult Logs: Check the application logs (transaction SLG1) for more detailed error messages that can provide additional context on the issue.
