  • What causes this issue?

Too many characteristics were assigned to the specified dimension.
The database table to be created for a dimension of a "normal" InfoCube
may not contain more than 249 fields. You therefore may assign a maximum
    of 248 characteristics.
If, however, the property <LS>DIMID's </>was defined one-to-one for an
InfoCube, a <LS>unique index</> is created on the characteristics of the
dimension. In this case you can assign a maximum of 16 characteristics
    for each dimension.

    System Response

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

    How to fix this error?

Assign individual characteristics to another dimension or to a new
dimension so that the above limit is not exceeded.

This can lead to performance issues and is subject to system limitations.

    Cause:

    1. Exceeding Limits: Each dimension in SAP BW has a limit on the number of characteristics that can be assigned to it. When this limit is exceeded, the system generates the R7770 error.
    2. Model Design: Poor design of the data model can lead to an excessive number of characteristics being assigned to a single dimension.
    3. Data Volume: High data volume and complexity can exacerbate the issue, especially if many characteristics are being used in queries or reports.

    Solution:

    1. Review Dimension Design: Analyze the design of the dimension and consider whether all assigned characteristics are necessary. If some characteristics can be removed or consolidated, do so.
    2. Create Additional Dimensions: If certain characteristics are essential but exceed the limit, consider creating additional dimensions to distribute the characteristics more evenly.
    3. Optimize Queries: Review the queries that utilize this dimension and see if they can be optimized to reduce the number of characteristics being used at once.
    4. Check System Settings: Ensure that your system settings are optimized for performance and that you are not hitting any other system limitations.
    5. Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation for specific limits related to dimensions and characteristics in your version of SAP BW or HANA.

    • SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes that may provide additional guidance or updates related to this error.
