  • Message text: Process batch is preceding batch; characteristics should not be changed

  • Show details Hide details
  • What causes this issue?

The selected process batch was assigned to a process batch other than
the original batch. This other process batch has already been assigned
to a goods receipt row. Therefore, you should not delete the
characteristic value assignment of this process batch.
If you change the characteristic value assignment anyway, you must take
    account of the following:
The system does <ZH>not</> pass on the changed characteristic value
assigments to the other process batch and its successor proces batches.
If a goods receipt batch has already been created for the other process
batch or one of its successors, the characteristic value assignments may
differ from those in the original batch and goods receipt batch.

    How can this happen?

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message MILL_PC343 - Process batch is preceding batch; characteristics should not be changed ?

The SAP error message MILL_PC343, which states "Process batch is preceding batch; characteristics should not be changed," typically occurs in the context of production planning and batch management within the SAP system. This error indicates that there is an attempt to change characteristics of a batch that is not allowed because it is a preceding batch in a process order.

    Cause:

    1. Batch Relationship: In a production process, batches can have a defined sequence. A preceding batch is one that must be completed before a subsequent batch can be processed. Changing characteristics of a preceding batch can lead to inconsistencies in the production process.
    2. Batch Characteristics: The system enforces rules to maintain data integrity. If a batch is already in a process or has been completed, its characteristics should not be altered.
    3. Process Order Status: The status of the process order may not allow changes to the batch characteristics. For example, if the order is already confirmed or completed, changes may be restricted.

    Solution:

    1. Review Batch Status: Check the status of the batch in question. If it is in a completed or confirmed state, you may need to create a new batch or adjust the characteristics in a different way.
    2. Use Correct Transactions: Ensure that you are using the correct transaction codes for changing batch characteristics. For example, use transaction codes like MSC2N (Change Batch) or MSC3N (Display Batch) appropriately.
    3. Consult with Production Planning: If you need to change characteristics for a valid reason, consult with your production planning team or SAP administrator. They may need to adjust the process order or batch management settings.
    4. Batch Management Settings: Review the batch management settings in the configuration to ensure they align with your business processes. This may involve checking the configuration in the Material Management (MM) or Production Planning (PP) modules.

    Related Information:

    • Batch Management: Understand how batch management works in SAP, including the lifecycle of a batch and the implications of changing batch characteristics.
