  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message MDG_MDF238 - Object name of field name &1 differs from the target system (&2 vs. &3) ?

The SAP error message MDG_MDF238 indicates a mismatch between the object name of a field in the Master Data Governance (MDG) system and the corresponding field name in the target system. This typically occurs during data replication or data transfer processes where the field names expected by the target system do not match those in the source system.

    Cause:

    1. Field Name Mismatch: The field name in the MDG system (source) does not match the field name in the target system. This can happen if:

      • The field was renamed in one of the systems but not in the other.
      • The configuration in the MDG system is not aligned with the target system.
      • There are custom fields or extensions that exist in one system but not in the other.
    2. Configuration Issues: The mapping configuration between the source and target systems may not be set up correctly, leading to discrepancies in field names.

    3. Transport Issues: If changes were transported from one system to another, there may have been issues during the transport that caused the field names to become inconsistent.

    Solution:

    1. Check Field Names: Verify the field names in both the MDG system and the target system. Ensure that they match exactly, including case sensitivity.

    2. Update Configuration: If there are discrepancies, update the configuration in the MDG system to align with the target system. This may involve:

      • Modifying the data model in MDG.
      • Adjusting the mapping settings in the MDG configuration.
    3. Transport Consistency: If the issue arose after a transport, check the transport logs for any errors or warnings. Ensure that all necessary objects were transported correctly.

    4. Custom Fields: If custom fields are involved, ensure that they are defined in both systems and that their names match.

    5. Testing: After making the necessary changes, perform a test replication or data transfer to confirm that the issue has been resolved.

    Related Information:

    • MDG Configuration: Familiarize yourself with the MDG configuration settings, especially those related to data modeling and replication.
    • SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes that may address known issues or provide additional guidance on this error message.
    • Documentation: Review the SAP documentation for MDG to understand the data replication process and how field mappings are defined.
