  • Message class: M3 - Material Master

  • Message number: 817

  • Show details Hide details
  • What causes this issue?

    You have identified the material as a configurable material in the
    master record. The material is assigned to a material type other than
    <LS>configurable material</>. Quantity-based inventory management is
    defined for the material type assigned. Consequently, you can also
    define this material as a variant by entering its material number as
    the configurable material and assigning configuration values. However,
    you must first have created the configuration parameters for the
    material.

    System Response

    The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

    How to fix this error?

    Set the <LS>Material is configurable</> indicator and save the material
    master record.
    On the <LS>Material Master</> screen, choose <LS>Environment</> ->
    <LS>Configuration profile</> -> <LS>Create</>, and assign the variant
    class to the material.
    Call up the material master record again and enter the current material
    number as the configurable material. The system automatically requests
    you to assign configuration values.

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message M3817 - You have not yet assigned configuration values ?

    The SAP error message M3817, "You have not yet assigned configuration values," typically occurs in the context of materials management or production planning when a user attempts to create or process a document (like a sales order, production order, or purchase order) that requires configuration data for a configurable material, but the necessary configuration values have not been assigned.

    Cause:

    1. Missing Configuration Assignment: The error usually arises when a configurable material (often a variant product) is being processed, but the user has not specified the required configuration values (like size, color, etc.) for that material.
    2. Incomplete Master Data: The material master data may not be fully set up, or the configuration profile may not be correctly defined.
    3. User Input Error: The user may have skipped the configuration step or not filled in the necessary fields in the transaction.

    Solution:

    1. Assign Configuration Values:

      • When creating or processing the document, ensure that you specify the required configuration values for the material. This is typically done in a dialog box that appears when you select a configurable material.
      • If you are using a sales order, for example, you should enter the configuration values in the "Configuration" tab or section.
    2. Check Material Master Data:

      • Go to the material master record (transaction code MM03) and verify that the configuration profile is correctly set up.
      • Ensure that all necessary characteristics and values are defined in the configuration profile.
    3. Review Configuration Profile:

      • Check the configuration profile assigned to the material to ensure it is complete and correctly set up. You can do this using transaction code CU50 (for configuration profiles).
    4. User Training:

      • Ensure that users are trained on how to enter configuration values correctly when dealing with configurable materials.
    5. Debugging:

      • If the issue persists, consider debugging the transaction to identify if there are any custom enhancements or user exits that might be affecting the configuration assignment.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes:
