  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message LRM_RE012 - Retention periods were applied for an inherited rule ?

The SAP error message LRM_RE012 indicates that retention periods have been applied to an inherited rule in the context of SAP's Records Management or Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) functionalities. This error typically arises when there is an attempt to modify or delete a retention rule that has inherited retention periods from a parent rule.

    Cause:

The error occurs due to the following reasons:

    1. Inherited Retention Rules: The retention rule you are trying to modify or delete has inherited retention periods from a parent rule. This means that the rule is dependent on the parent rule's settings.

    Solution:

To resolve the LRM_RE012 error, you can take the following steps:

    1. Review Inherited Rules: Check the parent retention rule to understand the inherited retention periods. You may need to modify the parent rule if you want to change the behavior of the child rule.

    2. Adjust Retention Periods: If you need to change the retention periods, consider doing so at the parent level. This will automatically propagate the changes to the child rules.

    3. Decouple Inheritance: If necessary, you can create a new retention rule that does not inherit from the parent rule. This allows you to set specific retention periods without being constrained by the inherited settings.

    4. Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for detailed guidance on managing retention rules and understanding the implications of inheritance in your specific SAP environment.

    5. Contact Support: If you are unable to resolve the issue, consider reaching out to SAP support or your internal SAP team for assistance. They may provide insights specific to your configuration and usage.
