  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message KS198 - Cost Element &1 in chart of accounts &2 already selected to be changed ?

The SAP error message KS198 indicates that a cost element is already marked for changes in a specific chart of accounts. This typically occurs when you attempt to modify a cost element that is currently being processed or has been flagged for changes by another user or session.

    Cause:

    1. Concurrent Changes: Another user or session is already making changes to the same cost element.
    2. Locking Mechanism: SAP uses a locking mechanism to prevent simultaneous changes to the same data. If a cost element is locked, you will receive this error when trying to modify it.
    3. Incomplete Transactions: If a previous transaction involving the cost element was not completed properly, it may still be in a locked state.

    Solution:

    1. Check for Active Sessions: Verify if another user is currently editing the cost element. You can use transaction code SM12 to check for locks on the cost element.
    2. Wait and Retry: If another user is editing the cost element, wait for them to complete their changes and then try again.
    3. Release Locks: If you find that a lock exists but no one is actively using it, you may need to release the lock using transaction SM12. However, be cautious with this approach, as it may disrupt another user's work.
    4. Check Change Requests: If you are using a change request system, ensure that the cost element is not part of an active change request that is being processed.
    5. Consult with Colleagues: If you are unsure about the status of the cost element, consult with your colleagues or system administrator to confirm if it is being used elsewhere.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as KS01 (Create Cost Element), KS02 (Change Cost Element), and KS03 (Display Cost Element).
    • User Authorizations: Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to make changes to cost elements.
    • SAP Notes: Check SAP Notes for any known issues or patches related to this error message, as there may be specific fixes or recommendations provided by SAP.
