The SAP error message KM156, which states "Group & already exists for table GLTPC," typically occurs when there is an attempt to create or modify a group in the GLTPC table (which is related to the SAP Controlling module) that already exists. This can happen during various processes, such as data uploads, configuration changes, or during the execution of certain transactions.
Cause:
- Duplicate Entry: The most common cause of this error is that the group you are trying to create or modify already exists in the GLTPC table.
- Data Upload Issues: If you are uploading data (e.g., through LSMW or other data migration tools), the source data may contain duplicates.
- Configuration Errors: Incorrect configuration settings or attempts to create groups without checking existing entries can lead to this error.
Solution:
Check Existing Groups: Before creating a new group, check the existing entries in the GLTPC table to ensure that the group you want to create does not already exist. You can do this by using transaction codes like SE11 (Data Dictionary) or SE16 (Data Browser) to view the contents of the GLTPC table.
Modify Existing Group: If the group already exists and you need to make changes, consider modifying the existing group instead of creating a new one.
Data Cleanup: If you are uploading data, ensure that your source data does not contain duplicates. Clean up the data before performing the upload.
Error Handling in Uploads: If you are using a data upload tool, implement error handling to catch and manage duplicate entries before they cause issues.
Consult Documentation: Review SAP documentation or notes related to the GLTPC table and the specific transaction you are working with for any additional guidance or best practices.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages
(message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.
An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
