  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message K3081 - Cost estimate can only be displayed in change mode ?

The SAP error message K3081, "Cost estimate can only be displayed in change mode," typically occurs when you are trying to display a cost estimate in a mode that does not allow for viewing or editing. This error is often encountered in the context of cost accounting and controlling modules within SAP, particularly when dealing with cost estimates for materials or production.

    Cause:

The primary cause of this error is that the cost estimate you are trying to access is not in a mode that allows for display. This can happen if:

    • The cost estimate is locked for editing by another user.
    • You are trying to access the cost estimate in a mode that does not permit display (e.g., you are in a transaction that requires change mode).
    • The cost estimate is marked as "inactive" or "not released," which may restrict access.

    Solution:

To resolve the K3081 error, you can try the following steps:

    1. Check User Lock: Ensure that no other user is currently editing the cost estimate. You can use transaction code SM12 to check for locks on the cost estimate.

    2. Use the Correct Transaction: Make sure you are using the correct transaction code for displaying cost estimates. For example, use CK13N (Display Cost Estimate) instead of a transaction that might be intended for changes.

    3. Change Mode: If you need to make changes to the cost estimate, switch to change mode using the appropriate transaction code (e.g., CK11N for creating a cost estimate).

    4. Check Status: Verify the status of the cost estimate. If it is not released or is inactive, you may need to activate or release it before you can display it.

    5. Authorization: Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to view or edit cost estimates. If you lack the required permissions, contact your SAP security administrator.

    6. Consult Documentation: If the issue persists, refer to SAP documentation or consult with your SAP support team for further assistance.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as CK11N (Create Cost Estimate), CK13N (Display Cost Estimate), and CK40N (Cost Estimate for Material).
    • Costing Variants: Understand the costing variants and their configurations, as they can affect how cost estimates are displayed and managed.
    • SAP Notes: Check for any SAP Notes related to this error message, as they may provide additional insights or patches that could resolve the issue.
