  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message J1053 - Table contains characteristics not defined in current operating concern ?

The SAP error message J1053, which states "Table contains characteristics not defined in current operating concern," typically occurs in the context of Profitability Analysis (CO-PA) when there is a mismatch between the characteristics defined in the operating concern and those present in the data being processed.

    Cause:

    1. Mismatch of Characteristics: The error usually arises when the data in the CO-PA tables contains characteristics (like segments, products, etc.) that are not defined in the current operating concern. This can happen if:

      • The operating concern has been changed or redefined.
      • Data was loaded or migrated from another system or environment that had different characteristics.
      • There are inconsistencies in the configuration of the operating concern.
    2. Configuration Issues: If the characteristics in the operating concern are not properly configured or if there are changes in the configuration that have not been reflected in the data, this error can occur.

    Solution:

    1. Check Operating Concern Configuration:

      • Go to the configuration settings for the operating concern in SAP (Transaction code: OKB9).
      • Verify that all necessary characteristics are defined in the operating concern you are working with.
    2. Data Consistency Check:

      • Use transaction KE4S (for CO-PA) to check the consistency of the data in the CO-PA tables.
      • Identify any records that contain characteristics not defined in the current operating concern.
    3. Adjust Data:

      • If you find records with undefined characteristics, you may need to either delete these records or adjust them to match the defined characteristics in the operating concern.
    4. Reconfigure if Necessary:

      • If the operating concern needs to be reconfigured, ensure that all relevant characteristics are included and that the data is consistent with this configuration.
    5. Transport Requests:

      • If changes were made in a development environment, ensure that the transport requests are properly moved to the production environment.
    6. Consult Documentation:

      • Review SAP documentation or notes related to CO-PA and the specific error message for any additional guidance or updates.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as KE4S, OKB9, and KE30 (for reporting).
    • SAP Notes: Check SAP Notes for any known issues or patches related to this error message.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages (message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.

An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
