The SAP error message IR049, which states "Characteristic not allowed: different dimension," typically occurs in the context of SAP BW (Business Warehouse) or SAP HANA when there is a mismatch in the dimensions of the characteristics being used in a query or report. This error indicates that the characteristics you are trying to use together do not share the same dimensionality, which is a requirement for certain operations in SAP.

    Cause:

    1. Dimension Mismatch: The most common cause of this error is that the characteristics involved belong to different dimensions. For example, if you are trying to combine a characteristic from a sales dimension with one from a finance dimension, SAP will throw this error.
    2. Incorrect Query Design: The query or report may be incorrectly designed, leading to the inclusion of incompatible characteristics.
    3. Data Model Issues: There may be issues in the underlying data model, such as incorrect relationships or hierarchies between the characteristics.

    Solution:

    1. Check Characteristics: Review the characteristics being used in your query or report. Ensure that they belong to the same dimension or are compatible for the operation you are trying to perform.
    2. Modify Query: If you find that the characteristics are indeed from different dimensions, consider modifying your query to use only those characteristics that are compatible.
    3. Data Model Review: If you suspect that the issue is related to the data model, review the InfoObjects and their relationships. Ensure that the dimensions are correctly defined and that the characteristics are appropriately linked.
    4. Use of Hierarchies: If you are using hierarchies, ensure that the hierarchy levels are correctly defined and that they align with the characteristics being used.
    5. Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for specific guidelines on the characteristics and dimensions relevant to your query.

    Related Information:

    • SAP BW Documentation: Check the official SAP BW documentation for more details on dimensions and characteristics.
    • SAP Community: Engage with the SAP Community forums to see if others have encountered similar issues and how they resolved them.
    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as RSA1 (Data Warehousing Workbench) to analyze and modify your data model.
