  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message ILM_STOR_CS093 - Variant '&1' update not possible; variant is already used ?

The SAP error message ILM_STOR_CS093 indicates that a variant (in this case, identified by '&1') cannot be updated because it is already in use. This typically occurs in the context of Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) when trying to modify a variant that is currently being referenced or utilized in some way.

    Cause:

    1. In Use: The variant you are trying to update is currently being used in a process, report, or configuration. This could mean that it is linked to a job, a report, or another object that is actively using it.
    2. Locking Mechanism: SAP has a locking mechanism to prevent changes to objects that are currently in use to maintain data integrity and consistency.

    Solution:

    1. Identify Usage: Determine where the variant is being used. You can check transaction codes or reports that might be referencing the variant. This may involve checking job schedules, report configurations, or other related settings.
    2. Remove Usage: If possible, remove the variant from any active processes or configurations. This may involve:
      • Deleting or modifying jobs that reference the variant.
      • Changing report settings to use a different variant.
    3. Wait for Completion: If the variant is being used in a long-running process, you may need to wait until that process completes before attempting to update the variant again.
    4. Check Locks: Use transaction codes like SM12 to check for locks on the variant. If you find any locks that are no longer needed, you can release them (with caution).
    5. Consult Documentation: Review SAP documentation or notes related to ILM and variants for any specific guidelines or best practices.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as SE38 (for executing reports), SM37 (for monitoring jobs), and SE11 (for data dictionary objects).
    • SAP Notes: Check SAP Notes for any known issues or patches related to ILM and variants.
    • User Permissions: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to modify the variant and that no other users are currently editing it.

If the issue persists after following these steps, consider reaching out to your SAP support team or consulting with SAP's support resources for further assistance.
