The SAP error message "IE040 Equipment being edited: Maintenance of hierarchy not possible" typically occurs when you attempt to make changes to an equipment hierarchy while the equipment is currently being edited or locked by another user or process. This can happen in various scenarios, such as when you are trying to change the hierarchy of an equipment that is in use or being modified in another session.

    Cause:

    1. Equipment Locking: The equipment is currently being edited by another user or transaction, which locks the equipment for changes.

    Solution:

    1. Check for Locks:

    2. End Other Sessions:

      • If you have multiple sessions open, ensure that you are not editing the same equipment in another session. Close any other sessions that might be using the equipment.
