Message text: Key figure block &1, row &2, column &3: Formula cannot be converted
Beginning with Release 3.0C, the syntax of various formula types in the
Report Writer has been standardized (->
<DS:TX.RG-RW-FORMULA_SYNTAX>Syntax</>). In particular, operands in key
figure blocks are now enclosed in apostrophes ('). During the
automatic conversion to this new format, very long formulas may no
longer fit in the provided database field. This is what happened to the
formula in question in row &v2&, column &v3& of the key figure block
no. &v1&.
Since an automatic correction is not possible, the formula must be
deleted. The formula is set to the value 0.
Make sure that the converted form of the formula is first stored when
the report is saved.
Edit long formulas. Unlike in previous Releases, you can now also
refer to a formula within a formula. This enables formulas to be
defined more compactly. You can also define a key figure block with
the required parts of a formula and suppress them in the report.
Make sure you read OSS Note 41938. The program described in this note
lists all of the key figure block formulas that may exceed the maximum
valid length as a result of this conversion.

GR229
- Key figure block &1, row &2, column &3: Formula cannot be converted ?The SAP error message GR229 indicates that there is an issue with a key figure formula in a planning application, typically within the context of SAP BW (Business Warehouse) or SAP Analytics Cloud. This error occurs when the system is unable to convert a formula for a specific key figure due to various reasons.
Cause:
- Invalid Formula Syntax: The formula defined for the key figure may contain syntax errors or unsupported functions.
- Data Type Mismatch: The data types of the operands in the formula may not be compatible, leading to conversion issues.
- Missing Key Figures: The formula may reference key figures that are not defined or available in the context of the calculation.
- Complexity of the Formula: The formula might be too complex or involve too many nested calculations, which can lead to conversion problems.
- Version Compatibility: There may be compatibility issues with the version of SAP BW or the specific planning application being used.
Solution:
- Review the Formula: Check the formula for any syntax errors or unsupported functions. Ensure that it adheres to the expected syntax for key figure definitions.
- Check Data Types: Verify that all operands in the formula are of compatible data types. If necessary, convert data types to ensure compatibility.
- Validate Key Figures: Ensure that all key figures referenced in the formula are defined and available in the planning context.
- Simplify the Formula: If the formula is too complex, consider breaking it down into simpler components or using intermediate key figures to reduce complexity.
- Test in Isolation: If possible, test the formula in isolation to identify the specific part that is causing the conversion issue.
- Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for guidance on the specific functions and syntax used in key figure formulas.
- Check for Updates: Ensure that your SAP system is up to date, as updates may resolve compatibility issues or bugs related to formula processing.
