  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message FIPR272 - Product with key &1 already exists ?

The SAP error message FIPR272 indicates that there is an attempt to create or update a product in the system, but a product with the same key already exists. This typically occurs in the context of product master data management, particularly in modules related to product lifecycle management (PLM) or materials management (MM).

    Cause:

    1. Duplicate Entry: The most common cause is that the product you are trying to create or update already exists in the database with the same key (e.g., product ID, material number).
    2. Data Migration Issues: If you are migrating data from another system or performing a bulk upload, there may be duplicates in the data being imported.
    3. Incorrect Input: The user may have mistakenly entered the same product key or ID that is already in use.

    Solution:

    1. Check Existing Products: Before creating a new product, check the existing product list to see if the product already exists. You can do this by searching for the product key in the relevant transaction (e.g., MM03 for material master).
    2. Use a Different Key: If you need to create a new product, ensure that you are using a unique key that does not conflict with existing entries.
    3. Data Cleanup: If you are migrating data, ensure that your data is clean and does not contain duplicates. You may need to remove or consolidate duplicate entries before importing.
    4. Error Handling in Uploads: If you are using a mass upload tool (like LSMW or BAPIs), implement error handling to catch duplicates before they cause issues.
    5. Consult Documentation: Review SAP documentation or consult with your SAP administrator for specific guidelines on managing product keys and master data.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as MM01 (Create Material), MM02 (Change Material), and MM03 (Display Material).
    • Master Data Management: Understanding the principles of master data management in SAP can help prevent such issues in the future.
    • SAP Notes: Check SAP Notes for any known issues or patches related to this error message.
    • User Authorization: Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to create or modify product data in the system.

If the problem persists after following these steps, it may be beneficial to consult with your SAP support team or a technical consultant for further investigation.
